ONE GIANT LEAP FOR CLEAN POWER
The world’s first global free-running jam against climate change September 26, 2009 – A world record for the largest ever global free-running jam to take place around the world in one day will be set today – as part of the One Giant Leap climate change campaign. 3,000 of the rooftop-leaping athletes across over 100 cities in 35 countries will join forces to take part in the “global climate jam” and show their support for the campaign.
One Giant Leap, led by climate change NGO Sandbag and sporting group Parkour Generations, is a unique initiative that specifically focuses on the global electricity sector. This sector is the biggest, easiest and the most important of all carbon emitting sectors to address and it can tackle climate change in One Giant Leap. The global event commences in New Zealand and concludes in Hawaiii, visiting such diverse locations as Inner Mongolia and Las Vegas in between. UK events will take place at:
• IMAX centre, London from 11:00-15:00 | 10:00-14:00 (GMT)
• St Giles Churchyard, Oxford from 12:00-15:00 | 11:00-14:00 (GMT)
• Newtonards, Northern Ireland from 14:30-17:00 | 13:30-16:00 (GMT)
• Bristol Square, Edinburgh from 12:00-14:00 | 11:00-13:00 (GMT)
• Dundee Church, Dundee from 11:00-13:00 | 10:00-12:00 (GMT)
• Brunswick Street, Glasgow from 14:30-16:30 | 13:30-15:30 (GMT)
Through a co-ordinated display of urban acrobatics and daredevil moves, One Giant Leap hopes to encourage people around the world to get involved by attending their nearest jam and by signing up to the campaign at www.sandbag.org.uk/onegiantleap Sandbag will direct this public support towards the UN meeting taking place in Copenhagen this December – in a bid to JUMP start a climate deal, DROP global power emissions by 10% and ROLL out clean electricity everywhere. If included in the next global agreement, the One Giant Leap policy would control and reduce a third of all global carbon emissions - only 3,300 power stations around the world account for this huge source of emissions.
Bryony Worthington, Sandbag Founder and Director, comments: “We’re asking world leaders to focus their efforts on agreeing laws that will deliver a real change on the ground - creating massive investment in clean, safe forms of electricity. We’ll need clean electricity to heat our homes and power our cars in a low-carbon future. A deal for clean power can start to tackle climate change in One Giant Leap.”
The parkour network is a great example of a global community that has come together to take action. Their involvement has been particularly impressive in places with the highest power sector emissions such as Australia, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United States and Europe. Dan Edwardes, Director of Parkour Generations, adds: “Parkour is a low-carbon and environmentally sustainable activity, and parkour groups have a long history of positive engagement with the local community and environment, neither of which can thrive without a safe climate. We’re very happy to be able to draw attention to this powerful and targeted campaign.”
